En este 2019 Vans nos ha sorprendido que algunos lanzamientos, menos de los que esperábamos y más si hablamos de una de las marcas más importantes de zapatillas de skate del mundo.

Hola, mi nombre es Neal Shoemaker, he sido diseñador de calzado en Vans durante los últimos 11 años y durante ese tiempo me he centrado en la categoría Pro Skate. Comencé como pasante en Vans y me encantó, 11 años después estoy igual de entusiasmado por ayudar a expandir lo que puede ser la linea de zapatillas de skate de Vans.
Sabemos que en breve vamos a ver el primer pro model de Rowan, ¿que podemos esperar de esta zapatilla?
El primer pro model de Rowan tiene un enfoque tradicional, el ha estado patinando principalmente la linea Pro Classics desde que se unió a Vans. Buscaba una silueta más acolchada. Las Rowan Pro se sienten como unas Pro Classic, pero con mas protección, cuentan con un acolchado adicional y una altura de cuello más alta.
¿Qué fue lo que buscaba Rowan para su primer pro model?
Rowan adoptó un enfoque bastante tradicional, nos inspiramos en las siluetas vulcanizadas de mediados de los 90 y principios de los 2000, interpretó el logotipo «Circle V«, que apareció por primera vez para Vans a mediados de los 90, en un estilo dibujado a mano, las zapatillas tienen pequeños paneles adicionales, una puntera grande con costuras triples y algo de acolchado adicional para mayor comodidad y protección.
Por lo que vimos, la silueta tiene una mezcla de varios modelos de la marca, ¿en qué se inspiraron?.
Yo diría que las Half Cab y las Rowley Classic es de donde tomamos mucha inspiración. Esos eran modelos que Rowan patinaba mucho hace un par de años cuando comenzamos este proceso. La altura del cuello recuerda a unas Half Cab, así como la puntera grande, y las Rowley en cuanto al equilibrio visual y la proporción. Es algo que tomamos para lograr que la silueta parezca que fue creada hace 20/25 años atrás.
En el último tiempo Vans ha implementado mucha tecnología en sus modelos, el mejor de los casos es son las AVE Pro, ¿que novedades podemos encontrar en las Rowan Pro?.
La tecnología AVE Pro es bastante visible a primera vista, pero el Rowan Pro es mucho más sutil. Dado que Rowan estaba interesado en mantener la estética tradicional y basada en la herencia. Lo usamos como una oportunidad para mejorar la amortiguación y la durabilidad.
Hemos refinado y mejorado el compuesto de goma en la pared lateral y la parte inferior para que sea más duradero y más adherente. Después de un extenso refinamiento de compuestos y pruebas, mejoramos la fórmula de goma Pro Skate en algo que llamamos SickStick, una versión más duradera y con más agarre que las suelas tradicionales de Vans.
También ajustamos y mejoramos la plantilla Ultracush HD a la cual denominamos PopCush, que tiene más retorno de energía para mantener a los skaters menos cansados después de un largo día de patinaje sin sacrificar la comodidad y la protección contra impactos que teníamos en la plantillas anteriores.
¿Cómo fue trabajar con Rowan?, ¿cuánto duró el proceso?
Rowan es genial, es puntual, tiene un punto de vista centrado en sus necesidades de lo que necesita en una zapatilla, articula bien los comentarios y estaba dispuesto a trabajar con nosotros en cada paso del camino. Es de talla 9, esto hizo posible que este involucrado en cada muestra que nos llegaba.
En los últimos años las zapatillas con más tecnología están de vuelta, así también las que incorporan una media suela cupsole, Vans ha hecho un gran trabajo con su tecnología Waffle cup, ¿qué nos tienen preparado para lo que resta del 2020?
Hay otro modelo con Wafflecup a finales de este año para Kyle Walker, y tenemos algunas iteraciones en las que estamos trabajando con Gilbert Crockett y Anthony Van Engelen también, Gilbert y Anthony son más exploraciones de la parte superior que de las suelas.
Hemos visto un pequeño adelanto de las Walker 2, ¿hay algo más que nos puedas adelantar.?
Kyle saldrá con nuevo pro model con una suela Wafflecup en el otoño del 2020. Una versión de Slip–On limpia y moderna.
Eso es emocionante, Kyle está realmente entusiasmado con mostrar lo que puede ser una silueta slip-on para Vans. Ya hay imágenes de él poniéndolas a prueba en el último video de Real, Be Free.
Gilbert tiene una versión High–top en su pro model también, que tiene un aspecto de vintage, con toda la durabilidad y función de su pro model actual.
Por último, el 2019 fue un gran año para todos los amantes de las zapatillas de fines de los 90s principios del 2000, Hemos visto que Vans ha re lanzado las Rowley, veremos más colores de esta silueta este año? Hay algún otro modelo dando vueltas?
Geoff tiene preparado un lanzamiento especial en los próximos meses del Rowley Pro junto a su marca, FreeDome. No quiero contar demasiado, pero están increíbles, no es una combinación de colores que uno esperaría ver. En cuanto a otros modelos, tendremos elementos emergentes de vez en cuando en Pro Classics o con proyectos especiales, pero tendrán que esperar para conocerlos.
Hello, my name is Neal Shoemaker, I’ve been a footwear designer at Vans for the past 11 years and during that time I’ve focused on the Pro Skate category. I started as an intern at Vans and loved it, and now 11 years later I’m just as stoked to help expand what Vans skateboarding footwear can be.
We know that soon we will see Rowan’s first pro model, what can we expect from this shoe?
Rowan’s first shoe is a traditional approach, he has been primarily skating Pro Classics product since getting on Vans and wanted a more padded, yet familiar feel. The Rowan Pro still feels like a Pro Classic, but is more protective with some additional padding and taller collar height.
What was Rowan looking for for his first pro model?
Rowan took a pretty traditional approach, but we were inspired by the mid 90’s and early 2000’s vulcanized silhouettes, he interpreted the “Circle V” logo, which first appeared for Vans in the mid 90’s, in a hand drawn style, the shoe has a little extra paneling, a large toe cap with triple stitching and some additional padding for comfort and protection.
From what we saw, the silhouette has a mix of several models of the brand, what were they inspired by?
I’d say the Half Cab and Rowley Classic is where we took a lot of inspiration. Those were shoes Rowan was skating a lot in a couple years back when we began this process. The collar height is reminiscent of a Half cab, as well as the large toe cap, and the Rowley as far as visual balance and proportion is something we referenced to make the shoe feel like it came from 20-25 years ago.
In recent times Vans has implemented a lot of technology in their models, the best case is the AVE Pro, what news can we find in the Rowan Pro ?.
The AVE Pro technology is pretty visible at first glance, but the Rowan Pro is much more subtle. Since Rowan was interested in keeping the aesthetic traditional and heritage based, we used that as an opportunity to improve cushioning and durability. We refined and improved the Rubber compound on the sidewall and bottom to be more durable and more grippy. After some extensive weartesting and compound refinement we tuned the Pro Skate rubber formula into something we are calling SickStick, a grippier and more durable version of what skateboarder love from Vans. We also adjusted and improved out Ultracush HD footbed to create PopCush, which has more energy return to keep skateboarders less fatigued after a long day of skating without sacrificing the comfort and impact protection we had in the Ultracush HD footbed.
How was working with Rowan? How long was the process?
Rowan is great, he’s punctual, has a focused point of view on his footwear needs, articulates feedback well and was willing to work with us every step of the way. He’s a size 9, so skating and giving feedback on every round of samples really helped too.
In recent years the shoes with more technology are back, as well as those that incorporate a cupsole, Vans has done a great job with its Waffle cup technology, what do we have prepared for the rest of 2020?
There is another Wafflecup coming later this year for Kyle Walker, and we have some iterations we’re working on with Gilbert Crockett and Anthony Van Engelen too, but Gilbert and Anthony are more upper explorations than outsoles.
We have seen a small preview of the Walker 2, is there anything else you can give us?
Kyle is coming out with an updated Wafflecup outsole in Fall 20 – his take on clean, modern Slip-On. That one is exciting, Kyle is really down to push what a slip-on silhouette for Vans can be and there is footage of him putting it to the test in the latest Real vid, Be Free .Gilbert has a High-top version on his shoe too, that has a real heritage look to it, with all the durability and function of his current shoe.
Finally, 2019 was a great year for all shoe lovers in the late 90s early 2000. We have seen that Vans has re-launched the Rowley, will we see more colors of this silhouette this year? Is there any other model going around?
Geoff has a special color releasing in the coming months of the RowleyPro for his brand, FreeDome. I don’t want to give too much away there, but they’re sick, not a color combination you’d expect, but still feels like it existed before. As for other models, we’ll have stuff pop up from time to time in Pro Classics or with a special projects, but you’ll have to wait and see.
